On Sunday, July 27th, at 6:00am I woke up to feed Penny (our dog) and as I was bending down to put her food down, my water broke. I called the Dr and she told me to come down to the hospital. My contractions started shortly after my water broke. I went to bed the night before at 9:30 pm and had a great night sleep so I was well rested for the journey ahead of me.
I had been having contractions for a couple weeks before but I wasn't expecting to deliver her before my due date. Tom and I drove to the hospital and they double checked to see if my water broke. They confirmed that it had. It had some merconium (baby poop) in the fluid so they would need to the NICU team on hand when she was born to make sure that she didn't swallow any of the fluid.
By about 12:30pm my labor had progressed and I was 90% effaced and 4 cm diatled. I knew that I was going to get an epidural to help with the labor pain and also to make sure that any hip pain that I had didn't affect my pushing. The nurse said that I should get it. I started to regret getting the epidural that early as soon as I got it. I wished that I would have waited a while since it slowed down my labor. I also wasn't in SO much pain that I couldn't handle it when I got it. I just HATED sitting in bed the WHOLE time.
At 2:30pm they came in to check me and I had only progressed to 5 cm so they had to give me pitocin to speed up my labor. I couldn't feel the contractions but Tom loved looking at the monitor and telling me "WOW, that was a big one..Look it was bigger than the last one!" They came back and checked me in 2 hours and I had progressed to 9cm. They said that they would be back in an hour to check me again and then we would start pushing. Yea....that was funny....WE would be pushing!! Um, I think that it would just be ME pushing. BTW...I had an AWESOME nurse who took care of me. I couldn't be a delivery nurse. I just couldn't handle all the stuff that they have to deal with!!!
So WE started pushing at 6pm. At about 6:30pm the Dr came in to see how I was doing and she was happy with my progress. Well, one of my next pushes really surprised the Dr and she had to have me stop pushing. She had to hold Abbie back since she was about to come out. The Dr had to get her gown on and gloves and get ready to deliver Abbie. The NICU had to be called 3 times since they didn't have them ready. They didn't expect Abbie to come into the world so soon. I only had to push one more time and Abbie was born at 6:42pm. I can't even explain the way that I felt when I heard and saw her for the first time. It is amazing. She was checked out by the NICU and she was fine!!!
Tom and I asked our moms to leave the delivery room once she was born so that we could have some family time. It was so nice to have some time with my husband and our daughter. Tom was so supportive during my labor and he even cried (teared up) when she was born. It was such an overwhelming experiance and I would do it all over again.
We came home from the hospital on Tuesday and it has been a blur ever since. I am breastfeeding Abbie so we have had our good days and our bad days. She is just so amazing and it is wonderful to see Tom with her. He just stares at her and kisses her. He is going to be such an awesome dad. He has been a great support for me too. This whole pregnancy and birth of Abbie has brought us closer together. I feel blessed to have Tom as my husband. I have fallen in love with him all over again and it is even deeper than before.
Here are a few pictures of Abbie over the last few days. Thank you to all our friends who have stopped by and called to see how we all are doing. The outpouring of love is awesome and we appreciate all our friends and family even more.
More to come....
